"Today's class will be sure to brighten your day. We'll be learning Lumos Solem, a spell that creates a blinding flash of sunlight! So be sure to have sunglasses at the ready. It's for your own protection. I have prepared a lecture on Lumos Solem. I hope you find it illuminating!"
Professor Flitwick to his seventh-year students[src]

The Sunlight Charm[3] (Lumos Solem),[1][2] also known as the Lumos Solem Spell,[4] was a charm[2] used to produce a blinding flash of sunlight. As Devil's Snare hated sunlight and heat, this particular light-creation spell was very effective towards subduing it.[1] Wearing sunglasses was advised when practising this spell to protect one's eyes from the blinding light of the spell.[4][2] Specific wrist motions could modulate the volume of light the spell produced.[5]

During the 1990–1991 school year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Professor Filius Flitwick taught his seventh-year students how to cast this charm in Charms class.[2]

During Rubeus Hagrid's potluck, Molly Weasley suggested using the Sunlight Charm to brighten the Great Hall up, and when Ismelda Murk realised it was no longer raining, and the party was moved outside, Jacob's sibling cast the spell to create temporary good weather for the people attending. However, as they would have had to hold onto their wand for the entire potluck, Minerva McGonagall magically lifted their wand into the air, and the charm continued to stay cast.[6]

This charm was also covered in first-year Herbology classes at Hogwarts, in order to teach students how to basically defend themselves against the Devil's Snare.[4]

During the Calamity in the late 2010s or early 2020s, Minister for Magic Hermione Granger hosted a practical class on localised casting of this charm, which was attended by a Calamity Investigator working for the Statute of Secrecy Task Force. As part of the class, Hermione demonstrated that the volume of light produced could be modulated with specific wrist motions, which the Calamity Investigator used to improve their use of the Greenhouse Charm.[5]

Etymology

Derived from two words; the Latin lumen, meaning "light", and the Latin sol, meaning "of the sun", indicating that this spell produces "light of the sun".
